Recently, the Ministry of Education announced that full day Kindergarten will be starting this September. As usual, the Ministry starts small, learns from its mistakes and then implements changes over a period of many years. So, in keeping with this historical pattern, 1/3 of the schools in Ontario will start this September. The other 2/3 of the schools have until 2015 to implement full day Kindergarten. The Ministry has already admitted that the curriculum is not ready yet but it will be "play based".
The Ministry has yet to "work out" the employment issues with the teacher's union regarding the hiring of Early Childhood Educators. The Ministry will offer before and after school supervision, for which the parents must pay a fee (yet to be determined) and only if there is enough of a demand.
The Ministry has used the slogan "good for Kids". However, the Ministry will continue to only provide service according to when it is convenient to them (not the two weeks at Christmas; not the week in March; not the last week of June; not the first week of September if Labour Day is late and certainly not all of July or August. Could this be simply that the Ministry still believes it is 1800 and the children are needed to work on the farm or it is a more modern issue of not wishing to awake the teacher's union?).
At Scholars' Hall, Kindergarten is full day, everyday, 12 months a year. The only days that we do not have classes are statutory holidays, Saturdays and Sundays. We provide before and after school supervision and our curriculum is a full academic program including phonics, spelling, grammar, reading, writing, arithmetic, science, social studies, Spanish and French. This full day program began five years ago and it was expanded to include Grades One and Two last year. Scholars' has just announced that full year school will be extended to the end of grade six for the next school year.
Maybe the Ministry should come to Scholars' and see how to do it properly!
